How to Reduce the Look of Tech Neck Wrinkles

That crease across your neck can feel strangely personal, especially when your face still looks like you. You may have changed your skincare routine, yet your neck keeps revealing every year you cannot see elsewhere.

“Tech neck” describes horizontal neck lines that become more noticeable with repeated downward head positioning. Looking down at your phone does not permanently fold your neck after one afternoon. Repeated movement can make existing lines more visible, though.

Your neck also has thinner skin than many areas of your face. It contains less oil and often gets less skincare. That makes dryness and sun exposure especially noticeable.

The biggest daily step is sunscreen. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on your neck every morning. Extend it across the sides and upper chest when those areas stay exposed.

Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and damages elastin over time. That damage can deepen lines and reduce skin firmness. Sunscreen cannot erase established creases, but it helps prevent faster worsening.

Moisturizer also matters more than it gets credit for. Hydrated skin temporarily looks smoother because water fills the outer skin layers. Look for ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides.

You can also consider a retinoid at night. Retinoids increase skin-cell turnover and can support collagen production over time. Start slowly because neck skin can become irritated more easily than facial skin.

Use a small amount two nights weekly at first. Apply moisturizer afterward if your skin feels dry or sensitive. Increase gradually only if your neck tolerates it.

Your screen habits matter too, but posture advice needs some perspective. You do not need to hold your phone perfectly at eye level all day. Instead, change positions often and take regular screen breaks.

When reading for long periods, bring the screen higher when practical. Relax your shoulders and avoid staying in one deeply bent position for extended stretches. Variety matters more than perfect posture.

Be careful with aggressive neck exercises or repeated skin pulling. There is limited evidence that facial exercises can erase established neck wrinkles. Forceful rubbing may also irritate delicate skin.

If lines remain deep despite consistent skincare, dermatology treatments can offer more noticeable changes. Depending on your skin, a dermatologist may discuss retinoids, laser treatments, radiofrequency, ultrasound, or injectable options.

Those treatments differ greatly in results, risks, downtime, and suitability. A qualified dermatologist can assess whether you have surface lines, laxity, pigmentation, or several factors together.

That distinction matters because there is no single “tech neck” fix. Your lines may reflect repeated folding, sun damage, natural collagen loss, dryness, or skin laxity at the same time.

The most realistic goal is not to erase your neck overnight, but to slow further damage and soften what you can.

Still, even good skincare has limits. Sunscreen protects future skin, moisturizer improves dryness, and retinoids work gradually. None can guarantee that established folds disappear completely.

I have found that the hardest part is knowing which changes are worth your effort. I also know how different it feels when you finally see your reflection without immediately studying the lines.

His coworkers thought I was his mother when I opened the door. I stopped flinching at my own reflection after that.

I stood at the front door holding it open for my husband’s new coworkers when one of them looked me over and said I must be Mark’s mother. I am only three years older than him. After they left I sank to the kitchen floor and cried while staring at the deep lines around my mouth in the oven door, the quiet suspicion that the world had started looking through me finally confirmed. That same night the constant betrayal of the mirror began to ease. The ordinary moment of recognition that returned afterward is the reason I can still look back on that evening without shame.
